Being a Green Eco Warrior Intern – The importance of taking care of the earth

Name: Jack Wright Age: 17 Location: West Hartford, CT Green Eco Warrior Intern Date April 4 2015 I had always been aware of the importance of taking care of the earth, but until my family had an energy audit in my home, I had never witnessed the field work that directly aids sustainability efforts. I recall being both intrigued and inspired by the technique and the thoroughness of the energy audit, which provoked me to ask one of the workers about how they became involved with their work. Before the workers left, I was sure to ask if there was any way that I could be involved in the same field of work. One of the workers put me in contact with Leticia Colon de Mejias, the creator and President of Green Eco Warriors. I emailed Leticia right away, hoping to become further involved with efforts to improve the environment. Soon after, I received a response. That next Saturday, I began my work with Green Eco Warriors. For the past two years, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an intern with Green Eco Warriors. I love being able to spread environmental awareness to youths through creative mediums. For example, I have helped write and edit scripts for skits, create costumes, and make props. Perhaps my favorite medium is the comic book series, featuring Dinero the frog. The highlight of my time as an intern is definitely the Youth Summit, held at the beginning of last Summer. Hundreds of students from schools that Green Eco Warriors had visited spent the day playing games and learning more about how they can help the earth, accompanied by the Green Eco Warriors staff and special guest, Jeff Barrie, who directed Kilowatt Ours. CT STEM students attend the Save Energy Save Dinero® Youth Summit!

On Tuesday June 3rd two hundred fourth and fifth grade students from Betances STEM magnet school in Hartford, CT participated in the Save Energy Save Dinero Youth Summit. The event was hosted by the Green Eco Warriors, a nonprofit organization which provides energy conservation and sustainability education to schools, families, and communities. The summit engaged students in tactile energy education, sustainability training, and leadership skills. Jeff Barrie the award winning documentarian of “Kilowatt Ours” and Leticia Colon de Mejias, Latina author of “Dinero the Frog Learns to Save Energy” addressed the youth participants. The event and speakers focused on creating a culture of sustainable thinkers. “Your mind is your most valuable superpower”, Leticia told youth. “You can all make a difference by following your dreams”, was a powerful message shared by Jeff Barrie. “Educate, Motivate, Protect the Planet and our future” is the Green Eco Warrior creed. Youth confirmed the mission by chanting, “Green Eco Warriors Rock! Save Energy Save Dinero!” Students and teachers enjoyed this unique opportunity to play educational games, complete ropes course challenges, and watch student performed plays. Green Eco Warrior Comic Book

On June 3 2014 Green Eco Warriors Inc. released the long awaited Green Eco Warrior Comic Book – Issue 1 – The Beginning. The comic co-written by Casey Dilzer and Leticia Colon de Mejias and illustrated by Mytron Brewery focuses on five youth who learn that their destiny is to protect the planet. The youth and their friend, Cambio the monkey, must uncover the identity of Mr. Big Corp (an evil villain that feeds on greed), and defeat the Phantom Draw (a villain that steals energy). Green Eco Warrior comic teaches children to advocate, educate, communicate, and be leaders for the betterment of people and to protect the planet. Each issue introduces youth to important environmental and social concepts in a fun and engaging way. Meet the Green Eco Warriors

Green Eco Warriors work with others who care about the environment. They use education and motivation to fight for our planet’s survival. The original Warriors were fifth and sixth grade boys and their families. They began by watching documentaries about humankind’s impact on the planet. Then they started the Green Eco Warrior recycling program in their schools. Eventually the boys were featured on several news shows. Anyone can be a Green Eco Warrior! Defeating the Phantom Draw

The Phantom Draw lives in appliances that are still running after you have switched them off (this is called standby mode). You will know the phantom is still drawing power by a small green, blue, or red light on your appliance. The phantom draw is a major electricity waster and adds to air and water pollution. You can beat the Phantom Draw by using a power strip or unplugging appliances. Unplugging appliances, games, cellphone chargers, and televisions, or using a power strip that can be switched off completely will stop the Phantom in his tracks and lower your electric usage. How Much Waste Does Your School Create?

In one school year, Windsor Connecticut’s public schools throw out roughly half a million non-recyclable styrafoam lunch trays. If stacked one on top of another these trays would be taller than four of the worlds largest structures COMBINED! How did we figure this out? Peter Faulk of the Windsor Green Committee helped us with some research and provided the image of the trays stacked next to 4 of the world’s largest structures. Article by Leticia Colon de Mejias Photo Algalita Marine Research “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, features three million tons of plastic debris floating in a swirling mass of trash that has grown to be larger than the state of Texas. Humans toss another 2.5 million pieces of plastic into our oceans hourly. The United Nations Environmental Program reports an estimated 46,000 pieces of plastic debris floats on or near the surface of every square mile of ocean. Plastic, Fish and Plankton In parts of our oceans, there is more plastic than plankton. Over time with consistent exposure to the sun and water, the plastic breaks down from big pieces into lots of little pieces. Fish, birds, and sea life mistake the plastic for food and ingest the small pieces of plastic. For billions of years it was safe for fish and animals to eat objects floating in the water, this is because anything in the ocean was organic matter. Today sea animals are dying because they are eating plastic instead of organic matter. Although we don’t often think about plankton, these little guys play a big role in the planet’s eco-system. They are food for many animals such as fish and whales. In areas of the ocean where there are large amounts of plastic, the amount of plankton has decrease to alarming levels. It is important to understand that the plankton in our oceans removes 50% of the carbon dioxide in the planet’s atmosphere, and creates 50% of the oxygen in air we breath.
