Isaiah – Student and GEW Actor – Update

Isaiah Rosario- Green Eco Warriors past student and current Dinero Actor. Isaiah was six years old when he was introduced to Green Eco Warriors. Today he is 15 and has come back to teach kids at Hartford Public Schools about Creating a Culture of Sustainable ThinkersTM. He joined us for an interview on Earth Day. (Q1) What is like to be a Green Eco Warrior as a kid? (A)1 I felt good to be a part to something that was helping people understand the effects of climate change in our communities. (Q2) What do you most remember about your time at GEW? (A2) The most memorable part of being a GEW kid is hard to pick. I did so much at camp and in the community. My favorite memory might be the time I went to a science fair dressed as Dinero the Frog.  I got to see science done by other kids, I had never seen that type of scientific education in schools. Plus, I was able to meet new kids and expand my horizons. (Q3) What is like now that you are in High school, to be coming back and helping younger kids learn on Earth Day? (A3) It feels good to share what I know. To educate on the importance of Earth Day.  It is nice to earn money now that I am older. (Q4) What is one thing you do in your life now to protect people and the planet- that you learned as a Warrior? (A4) I recycle more now than I see my friends do. I pay attention to turning things off when I am not using them. I see connections to nature that I may not have known if I never went to GEW camp. (Q5) What are you next goals? (A5)...

Energy and the Environment Basics – Global Warming

Energy and the Environment Basics – Global Warming

Think of the planet’s atmosphere as a bath tub that is filling with water faster than the drain can empty it. It is the same for CO2 and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. If we don’t stop adding CO2 at a faster rate than it can be removed, the atmosphere will be overloaded, just like how the tub will overflow with too much water. We must stop adding greenhouse gases and increase the amount of plants that naturally remove the carbon dioxide from the environment. If we give the planet a chance to catch up, then the atmosphere will find balance. All we have to do is turn off the “faucet” and stop the pollution at its source! Every type of Energy Source has a different impact on the environment. Some of the effects of these energy sources include toxic waste and the release of green house gases. On the other hand, renewable energy sources are clean and cause little environmental impact. They are safer, more responsible alternatives to non-renewable energy sources which we use today. Did you Know? Most carbon emissions, and other types of pollution in the environment come from the burning of fossil fuels like coal, gas, and oil. These fuels are used for most of our energy needs, including electricity production and powering cars and other vehicles. We use more electricity today than ever before. Electricity is part of our everyday life. Think about how we use it to: cook and to keep food from spoiling heat and light homes and businesses wash and dry our clothes watch TV and play video games keep our electronic devices like cell phones or tablets charged The types and the amount of electricity we use directly impacts our environment! The good news is that you can make a positive...

Being a Green Eco Warrior Intern – The importance of taking care of the earth

Name: Jack Wright Age: 17 Location: West Hartford, CT Green Eco Warrior Intern Date April 4 2015   I had always been aware of the importance of taking care of the earth, but until my family had an energy audit in my home, I had never witnessed the field work that directly aids sustainability efforts. I recall being both intrigued and inspired by the technique and the thoroughness of the energy audit, which provoked me to ask one of the workers about how they became involved with their work. Before the workers left, I was sure to ask if there was any way that I could be involved in the same field of work. One of the workers put me in contact with Leticia Colon de Mejias, the creator and President of Green Eco Warriors. I emailed Leticia right away, hoping to become further involved with efforts to improve the environment. Soon after, I received a response. That next Saturday, I began my work with Green Eco Warriors. For the past two years, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an intern with Green Eco Warriors. I love being able to spread environmental awareness to youths through creative mediums. For example, I have helped write and edit scripts for skits, create costumes, and make props. Perhaps my favorite medium is the comic book series, featuring Dinero the frog. The highlight of my time as an intern is definitely the Youth Summit, held at the beginning of last Summer. Hundreds of students from schools that Green Eco Warriors had visited spent the day playing games and learning more about how they can help the earth, accompanied by the Green Eco Warriors staff and special guest, Jeff Barrie, who directed Kilowatt Ours. This event was both a celebration and a lesson,...
